What My Daughter is Reading – October 8, 2009

School is in session and The Amazing Dancer has been doing her required reading these past two months. She just finished The Giver by Lois Lowry and now she’s reading Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

The students had to pick a classic and a partner, who would also read that classic, and then they will debate whether it should still be considered a classic. The students have discussed what makes a book a classic. The teacher and his student teacher have talked about a couple of books they disagree on. It’s an interesting assignment although the person who gets to support the book as a classic seems to have an easier job. I would love to see the teachers actually go through each point and debate it for the class as an example.

What do you think defines a classic novel? Can a novel become UN-classic?

What My Daughter is Reading – July 9

What My Daughter is Reading is hosted by Jill at The Well-Read Child. Each week you take a look at what the young uns are reading and get some ideas.

Northanger Abbey
Jane Austen

The Amazing Dancer blew through Austenland. She enjoyed it. We talked a little abou the guy who lived in the garden house but she didn’t want to discuss it. Teenagers! You got take whatever conversation you can get.

Instead of waiting until next month, she decided to continue with her Everything Austen Challenge and start on Northanger Abbey. She’s off to Fine Arts Camp this week so she’s bringing this book and Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler. Hopefully, we’ll get more out of her next week!

What My Daughter is Reading – July 2

What My Daughter is Reading is brought to you courtesy of Jill at The Well-Read Child. You get to let everyone know what your child is reading so that we can all find new and exciting reading material.

The Amazing Dancer and I are both reading in the Everything Austen Challenge at Stephanie’s Written Word.

The challenge runs from July 1 – January 1, 2010 and you complete six Austen-themed books and/or movies.

The Amazing Dancer is reading 5 books and watching 1 movie:

  • Austenland by Shannon Hale
  • Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
  • Enthusiasm by Polly Shulman
  • Prada and Prejudice by Mandy Hubbard
  • Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
  • Pride and Prejudice movie with Kiera Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen

I’m going to read 5 books and watch 1 movie also:

  • Austenland by Shannon Hale (this will be my 3rd reading!)
  • Emma by Jane Austen
  • Bridget Jones’ Diary by Helen Fielding
  • Prada and Prejudice by Mandy Hubbard
  • Jane Austen Ruined My Life by Beth Pattillo
  • Clueless with Alicia Silverstone

As you can see, we have some overlap. It will be fun to discuss things as we go along. Of course, everything is subject to change, but these are our plans!

What My Daughter is Reading – June 25

What My Daughter is Reading is brought to you courtesy of Jill at The Well-Read Child.

The Amazing Dancer is out of town. I won’t see her until Sunday. We’ve communicated on Facebook and txt. Course when I reminded her to wear sunblock (on Facebook) I got the typical teenage response – OMG! MOM! Hey, I just want her to be safe!

This week she is reading Hero-Type by Barry Lyga. On the one hand, I’m glad she’s reading while hanging with her cousins but on the other hand, I haven’t read this yet. She also took two other books: Geek Girls Guide to Cheerleading (great book) and Hunger (I’m sad cuz I wanna read it).

Anywho, that’s what’s on The Amazing Dancer’s plate. Makes me wanna go read now…

What My Daughter is Reading – June 11

What My Daughter is reading was started by Jill at The Well-Read Child. If you are looking for ideas for the youngster in your life, or even for yourself, hop on over to Jill’s for additional ideas. Here I’ll keep you up-to-date on what my 13 yo, Amazing Dancer girl, is reading.

A week and 1/2 ago, the Amazing Dancer and I went to see Melissa Marr, Kelley Armstrong and Kim Harrison at Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville, IL. Melissa Marr did the most talking and she was quite funny!

The Amazing Dancer read Wicked Lovely the night before we went to Anderson’s so she could ask questions.

She had me pick up both Ink Exchange and Fragile Eternity from the library because she really enjoyed Wicked Lovely and she wanted to be sure she had them on hand when she needed them!

So, that’s what my daughter is reading – what’s going on with your youngster?
